Why silhouettes?
It’s an honest question: why would silhouettes be interesting, not only in history – but now, with modern people?
- It’s personable: in a world where we get little personal attention, the silhouette artist pays attention to just you
- It’s interesting: it’s all you – your face in a little package
- It’s unusual: How often do we modern people see someone “drawing” with scissors – and the revealed art is your own likeness?
- It’s historical: Silhouette profiles were created for hundreds of years in common practice: but stopped just over 140 years ago. It’s like stepping back into time.
- It’s a keepsake: you get to take home your ‘little person’, the person who looks just like you
- It’s a memory: parents and children can remember “what your face looked like” from this present moment
- It’s portable: a silhouette artist needs little equipment but can be vastly visual
- It’s a window into your soul: who knows what interesting conversations can arise with a silhouette artist…
and… because it’s rare. Professional silhouette portraiture is only practiced by a handful of people around the world. It’s certainly worthwhile to participate in something rare than do the same thing over and over and over and over again.
You too may be able to joyfully add to the list above after your own experience.
