NOTE: Silhouettes be located at the Thompson Tavern

Silhouette portraits were commonly cut for enthusiastic nostalgic people at festive events from the mid 19th-century to modern day. Agricultural fairs were - and in some places, still are - the event of choice for people create their silhouette portrait.

Dates: Saturday, October 2, and Sunday, October 3, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Celebrate the bountiful Western NY harvest as the Museum shines in its finest fall colors! Enjoy livestock and cooking demonstrations, entertainment for the whole family, and browsing for unique finds at the market in the tradition of the country fairs of days gone by.

Find fresh, flavorful and wholesome smoked meats, honey, apples, cheeses, maple syrup, baked goods and other tempting wares for sale to satisfy the palates of many. All items are grown or made right here in Western New York. So mark your shopping list and head to the fair!

Laugh along with the shows and listening to music…  Then, explore demonstrations of vintage agricultural equipment on the Village Square,  request a custom 19th-century style silhouette from Silhouettes by Hand ($), or try tin tapping ($). Be immersed in Haudosaunee harvest traditions with the Haudenosaunee Dancers from Onondaga, and be awed by the acrobatics of Kevin & Sierra.

As was common at 19th-century fairs, the men's base ball teams will square off for the Mayor’s Cup Championship trophy. Games will be held in Silver Base Ball Park, the only replica 1800s base ball park in the nation.

Visit Pioneer Farm to meet the museum's cattle, sheep and fowl. Try riding side saddle or milking a goat with the Genesee Country Dairy Goat Club. Explore an extensive range of bird life in the Waterfowl Tent and Exhibition Barn during the Rochester Poultry Association's 114th Annual Show. Watch professional sheep herding dogs from Cherry Hill Training Center round up the herd. Befriend horses and donkeys as they parade around the Great Meadow and Historic Village. Talk with local 4-H youth exhibiting rabbits, or check out the falconry demo.

There are exhibitions in more than 150 categories of judged baked goods, preserves, hand-made needlecrafts and the industrial arts—including tin, iron and wooden wares; pottery; cooperage (barrel making); printing; and broom and soap making.

Youth compete in 60 different aged categories, from penmanship and pottery to photography and pumpkin pie.

Among the competitions are those for the largest pumpkin, one for weight and a second for size. The competitions are open to museum members and the public alike, and most have both 19th-and 21st-century categories . This year entrants will receive one day free admission to the Fair!

Eye-catching 19th-century vegetables, many of them unfamiliar to modern gardeners, will also be found in a special vegetable and floral tent.
