Event description:

Join George Washington and his French ally, General the Comte de Rochambeau on the Courthouse Green in downtown Somerville for a Popup Encampment!

Residents will have an opportunity to interact with Washington, General Rochambeau and Revolutionary War soldiers at the pop-up encampment on Somerville’s Main Street, between North Bridge and Grove streets. Participants will be entertained by fife and drums, cannon and musket demos, and a variety of activities.

French troops under the command of the General Rochambeau joined the Continental Army in the fight for independence. While General Washington served as the commander of the allied armies, General Rochambeau had the military expertise to play a vital role in strategic planning.

“Washington and Rochambeau led their armies through Somerset County, and we are thrilled to offer this opportunity to interact with and experience the life of soldiers during the Revolutionary War,” said Commissioner Deputy Director Melonie Marano, Cultural and Heritage liaison. “Somerset County is proud of our rich heritage and our designations as both a Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area and part of the Washington-Rochambeau National Historic Trail.”
